Organization background
826NYC (826NYC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering creativity,
empowering young voices and helping students improve their writing skills.
They run an after-school program called Write After School and a day program
called Out-of-School, that runs during school. They also host classes around NYC
for their Write Together program, a program that includes interactive
writing experiences for school groups that encourage creative expression,
explore the elements of storytelling, and strengthen writing skills.
Project background
The Write After School (WAS) program is a free, twice-weekly initiative for
elementary and middle-school students (grades 2-8) from families demonstrating
financial need. This program addresses the critical need for reading,
writing and social-emotional development among New York City youth,
particularly those from marginalized communities. Students engage in
creative writing, literacy activities, and a book club,
culminating in the publication of their work in English/Spanish chapbooks.
