Organization background
Book Fairies is a non-profit organization that sources and redistributes
books to under-resourced communities on Long Island, New York City, and
internationally. They source, sort, and distribute books year-round:
collecting gently used and new books through book drives and drop-offs;
diversifying inventory through bookstore partnerships, an Amazon wish list,
and grants. As of 2025, they have distributed more than 5 million books.
Project background
The Building Home Libraries program aims to increase access to high-interest,
age-appropriate books among disadvantaged children by distributing books
to partnering Title I elementary schools on Long Island,
in an effort to help children build their own home libraries,
while also strengthening school and classroom libraries, fostering literacy skills and a love of reading.
GKF contributions to BF
- 2024: Funding to distribute at least 22,000 books amongst an estimated 3,664 PreK-5 students,
across 10 Title I elementary schools, as part of the Building Home Libraries program.
